Martin holding twig in nest of a large natural gourd.
The gourd is so large that you can't see much of the bottom of it from
this angle. The bottom of the tunnel entrance is in the upper right
of the photo, and a drain hole appears in the lower left of the photo. |

Female sitting inside tunnel entrance with the end of her tail showing
in this picture. The tunnel is made with a PVC end cap with an excluder
door cut into it. It has an inner and outer porch. (picture
of outside) |

Female with twig, male sitting beside her. |
 |
Female nestbuilding. She holds her wings out and down on the
ground while shuffling her legs and body around on the bottom of the gourd. |
 |
Female nestbuilding with male standing near entrance watching out.
Later they switched and the male worked on the nest with the female watching
outside. |

Female holding a leaf. |
 |
Female standing near tunnel entrance. You can see her better
in the light when she's in this area. |
 |
Female chattering after a small fight with an intruder. It looked
like a subadult male was in the cavity for a little bit, so maybe it was
him trying to come back in, but she certainly didn't let him. |
 |
Female looking in the direction of the camera. I don't know if
this is a coincidence or if she sees the reflection of the plastic covering
over the lens. The camera is installed through a tiny hole in the
gourd the size of a nickel, and doesn't protrude into the gourd at all.
It's taped to the outside with duct tape, so we'll see how long it stays
put. |
